![]() ![]() Kristijan more closely resembles the character of Rosario from Bunjevac’s short graphic narrative “Opportunity Presents Itself,” which opens her 2012 debut collection Heartless, and which could be read in conversation with Bezimena and the afterword. ![]() The narrator-much like Bezimena the book and Bezimena the character-is nameless (Bezimena is the Serbian word for nameless, which also relates to Bunjevac’s dedication in the afterword: “to all forgotten and nameless victims of sexual violence” ). Benny’s story, of course, is literally artificial at the level of the storyworld, as it is designed by Bezimena the Old, but the larger story of Bezimena and the Priestess is itself a tale told by a disembodied voice-the word bubbles always point to the blackness of space-to a star on the night sky. This creates a sense of continuity-with the word bubble page-but also metafictionally points to the artificial nature of the narrative. ![]() ![]() Bunjevac, for instance, often employs a black double spread to signal transition, which is always littered with tiny white spots it’s never pure black. Whether this is intentional-or merely a by-product of Bunjevac’s technique or the printing process-is difficult to tell, but they often work to create meaning. The tiny white spots are found throughout the graphic narrative and they often connect with the stars on the word bubble page on the left. ![]()
